Pihlajalinna is one of Finland’s leading providers of social and health care services, with digital services at the core of its operations. Pihlajalinna was founded in 2001 and offers social, health and wellbeing services in medical centres, hospitals, dental clinics, sports centres and our housing services around Finland, employing more than 7000 people.

The Challenge

In 2021, Pihlajalinna acquired Pohjola Hospital and, as a result of the transaction, gained access to the Hospital application, which was built in the AWS environment. As a result of the acquisitions, the Hospital application had to be transferred to Pihlajalinna’s management.

Pihlajalinna needed help in building its own AWS Landing Zone, so there would be good practice and a secure place for the mobile application in the future. The mobile environment required several changes, and transferring it from the old supplier required numerous measures to detach it from the old environment and move it to Pihlajalinna.

Within the available resources and limited time, Pihlajalinna needed to partner with a versatile and visionary operator who could handle the modernization and development of the AWS environment in a self-directed manner and help with future AWS development projects.

Our Solution

Cloud2 was a clear partner choice for Pihlajalinna due to its long shared history, strong cloud expertise, versatile IT expertise and self-directed approach. A strong AWS partnership and Cloud2’s out-of-the-box services make Cloud2 an agile operator that was known to be able to implement cloud management cost-effectively.

Cloud2 helped transfer the AWS environment from the old supplier to Pihlajalinna and Cloud2’s service. Cloud2 created a unified model for cloud management by building the platform in order with Cloud2’s Governance as a Service, where a continuously maintained cloud management model and an automated Landing Zone are created.

The workloads transferred to Pihlajalinna’s cloud were included in Cloud2’s Managed Cloud service, where Cloud2 monitors and manages Pihlajalinna’s cloud environment around the clock. Pihlajalinna introduced Cloud2’s cloud visibility service, Spotter, which offers a unique view of the security, costs, resources and CO2 emissions of cloud environments.

Results

The biggest benefits of the AWS solution implemented by Cloud2 have been cost savings, improved scalability, transparency in security matters and better performance of services for end customers.

The Spotter cloud management tool helps Pihlajalinna monitor the costs, security and resources of the cloud environment in real time and provides essential data, such as sustainability figures. The AWS environment built for Pihlajalinna is easy to scale up if necessary, and the further development of operations is simpler than before.
