The Challenge

Everway's exam applications needed to handle 50x normal load within 30 seconds during Denmark's national exams, with only 2 months to implement new infrastructure.

Our Solution

Cloud2 recommended and implemented Amazon ECS Fargate for faster scaling, conducted load testing, and provided training for Everway's team to manage the infrastructure.

About Everway

Everway is dedicated to helping people understand and be understood. Since 2005, the company has developed innovative, user-friendly tools to promote literacy.

The Challenge

Everways’ applications play a vital role during exams, used by students in Denmark in grades eight through ten during two intense weeks of final exams each year. The tests begin at 9 a.m., and every student logs in at the exact same time, causing a massive surge in traffic.

The previous infrastructure struggled to handle this demand - in normal situations, the applications work well, but during exams, the system experiences 50 times its normal load within just 30 seconds, which would cause the system to crash. The project came with a tight deadline: the new infrastructure had to be fully operational within just two months.

“Cloud2’s expert had a calm, ‘don’t panic’ attitude and he reassured us they would fix the infrastructure.”

Bo Visfeldt, Vice President of Engineering, Everway

Our Solution

Cloud2 conducted a thorough analysis and recommended an infrastructure tailored to Everway’s needs. Cloud2 proposed Amazon ECS Fargate to Everway instead of the initially planned EKS solution. This decision was based on performance data showing that ECS Fargate scaled faster and more effectively for their needs.

ECS Fargate could scale to 3,500 containers in just over five minutes, compared to eight minutes for EKS on Fargate. The migration process was seamless since ECS and EKS both use the same container image format from Amazon’s Elastic Container Registry (ECR).

“Cloud2’s expert really knew what he was doing. I had a small team of programmers who adjusted the program based on his specifications. Meanwhile, our test departments ran continuous load tests under his guidance. Cloud2 brought the knowledge, showed us what to do, and we provided the resources to make it happen.”

Results

The new infrastructure provided a flawless performance during the 2024 exam period. For the first time, the applications worked without any issues, and Everway received no complaints from users. Cloud2 didn’t stop there - they spent two days training Everway’s employees to ensure they could maintain and manage everything themselves.

“We had no issues whatsoever. But Cloud2 didn’t stop there. They went beyond simply building a robust infrastructure—they spent two days training our employees to ensure we could maintain and manage everything ourselves. That’s incredible service. Our cooperation with Cloud2 continues, and I truly enjoy working with them.”

Bo Visfeldt, Vice President of Engineering, Everway

“You need to recognize when you don’t have the capability or knowledge to handle something internally. If we had tried to do this on our own, it would have taken six months, and the result would have been uncertain.”
